Description: Scenes from Kanaval 2009 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. This particular dance is a tribute to the original inhabitants of the island, the Arawak (Taino) people. With some nice little commentary from our host Jean-Jacques.

Just like we pay homage to mother Africa and the great MOORS EMPIRE.

@Killayut There were a handful of Tainos hiding in the mountains when Africans came in, we intermixed, most Haitians are of WEST AFRICAN descent, a small handful of Haitian have Taino. Our two century long rituals, rara are African and Taino. Creole is a mixture of French,African,Taino, although, most Haitians are African, we were effected by their culture. They were the first true Haitians. We pay homage.

Stop embarrassing your self. People can see it. ARAWAKS are not and were not negros. They are and were native Americans who look like every native American and not African. It is stupid for Africans to represent ARAWAK Indians. Stop being stupid.

We proud to be majority African, we the proudest of them all, people of the African MOORS Empire, same Empire that ruled Spain and parts of West Europe. Haitians are proud of their African roots and most of us admit we African but some Haitian have Taino roots as well, the neg mawon found the remaining Taino communities in the mountains before the Haitian revolution and ended up intermixing. I hate when outsiders talk about things they know nothing about smh

You know nothing about Haitian culture. Outsides keep their mouth shut.

Paying homage to the original Haitians before us.

The majority of Haitians are mostly African, some are Taino. When Africans arrived from Northwest Africa, some of them rebel and fled to the mountains were they found the few Taino communities that were left still left. The neg mawon and Taino intermixed, fought and defeated the white armies. Majority of Haitians are definitely majority African but not all. Research before you talk about things you have no knowledge about.

i cant believe such a beautiful demonstration of synchronized dancing would arouse such anger... forget the names, they're just names yo, and people are people. this dance is dope.

To all the idiots who are talking Sh!t about the history of the Tainos on the island of haiti. I put up these videos so you can go educate yourselves about the island of hispaniola's History. Fools! The Tainos were the indigenous inhabitants of the different tribes in the Caribean islands. Christopher Columbus and the spaniards were nothing more then invaders and murders who robed and killed the indians. Go learn your history and stop hating on the Haitians for knowing their history. Haters!

There is nothing ARAWAK in any Haitian. . Haitians are infact the purest AFRICAN LOOKING people in the CARIBBEAN. That I know very well cos I lived there for a while.

VERY correct and a disgrace to the AFRICANS of Haiti..

There are no ARAWAK or Indians natives in AFRICA.

And there are no native indian settlements in Haiti. . The native indians may have lost it all and inter married with the AFRICANS.

Africans learning about Indian culture ?

You know very well that you would not question their action if they were of lighter complexion. It shows your prejudice towards them and what they are doing. I know for a fact that people often question your claim of being descendants of indigenuous indians. Just remember how that feels when people question your claim to be Tainos or Arawaks. Cause i know they do. Don't do onto others what you would not want others do onto you!

What many of you failed to understand about this dance, is the fact that the Haitians are taking time out at the begining of their carnaval festival to pay tribute to the original inhabitant of the land. They do the dance as a sign of respect and rememberance of the Tainos and the Arawaks which were the original inhabitant of the island. Yes there are still some native indians in Haiti Contrary to what you guys might think!

This is not the way to honor the Arawak, Taino or Kalinago People. This is making fun of our culture.

I lived in Haiti and yes I saw a few native indians but these people doing the Caribe thing are not the indians. Its just like black people doing some Chinese things.

I dont think thats true. Before our blood was united when the Spaniards brought the African slaves with them, we were Arawak/Caribe Indian. I personally embrace the African roots as well because I am what I am. I think if there are people who are selective they shouldn't be. We should embrace everything that makes us what we are.

Many Caribbeans these days claim to be either ARAWAK or Caribe indian. They are just ashame of their AFRICAN root.

MY RESPECTS TO HAITI, FOR KEEPIN OUR PEOPLES CULTURES ALIVE
